CANALE CUP - 22ND JULY 2010 - PLAYED AT BRENDALE FOOTBALL FIELDS
What a evening of Football in the Northern suburbs, the stands packed to the rafters and PaulyTV capturing our first game in the Canale Cup Quarter Finals. During one of our team meatings several weeks ago we discussed and dared to dream of playing against Rochedale Rovers in the semi-final round of the cub, with Toowoomba Raiders an old Division 1 opponent potentially standing in the way of this happening.
The opposition looked young and and we felt we needed to be at our best to beat the youthful exuberance, ensuring we stick to our signature passing game and only move forward when the timing is right. To our surprise the Toowoomba defence was left wanting and Robert Kidd first of multiple gaols came in the second minute. From this point Toowoomba did not have any answers against our experienced attack with Jason Poggi (16th minute), Robert Kidd (17th minute) and Luke McKenna (19th minute) slot quick goals in succession. The ACE defence and midfield was consistenly sharp and controlling of the game. In the 30th minute Luke McKenna slots his second goal un-apposed, leaving Toowoomba floundering at sea in the defence.
At the half time break, we agreed that we needed to treat the two 45 minute halves as separate games to maintain focus and keep developing our game.We introduced Danny Flaskas (returning from injury), Chris Peever into the side with immediate effect, where Jason Poggi (60th minute) and Robert Kidd (68th minute) scoring their second and third goals respectively bringing the score to 7 Nil.
To finish off a stellar night, Brady Smith who was playing his last game with the team to pursue university studies in the USA, scored the 8th goal of the night in the 76th minute with a gallant individual effort.
Exemplary Team work, refereeing, supporters and organisation now takes us to a semi-final clash with Rochdale. Who says dreams don't come through. Our supporters at ACE came out from everywhere and it was really terrific to see such a warm and friendly atmosphere where Mum, Dad and the kids all enjoyed two good games of fooball. Our supporters continue to play their contribution in the team winning games and the boys appreciate this both on the field and off. We look forward to supporting our Senior Women's team next Wednesday night who play their own semi-final of the Women's Cup at Wolter Park.
