FORWARD Kate Henderson has re-signed for ACE Women – and set her sights on Capital League finals football.
The prolific scorer, who has more than 200 goals to her name in the last six seasons, is a vital part of coach Jamie Sanckson’s plans.
With Director of Female Football Greg Bradley, Jamie worked hard to ensure the sought-after striker stayed in ACE colours for 2019.
“I was going to play for another club,” admitted Kate, last season’s ACE Golden Boot winner and Senior Women’s Club Person of the Year.
“But then I got a phone call from Greg telling me I was important to the club and the set-up.
“That made me realise I had actually become part of the club, being involved with the juniors and seniors – and all that.
“Then Jamie explained how I could be an asset to the team and after watching the (first pre-season) game on Sunday, I think we are going to be really good.
“The bar has gone up, but I think we can finish top four. Definitely, based on that weekend game – and that wasn’t us at full strength.”
ACE Women went down 6-2 at Virginia, who reportedly had nine substitutes to ACE’s two. To make matters worse, Kate broke a wrist in the first half.
But coach Jamie Sanckson was happy with the team’s performance – especially in the first half – and signing Kate.
“Off the field, Kate knows this club and helps out a lot behind the scenes and that’s what I like – people who give back, who are involved in the team and the club,” he said.
“On the field, Kate scored a fair few goals last season so she is such an important signing. My squad last season lacked someone to score 20 goals. I think Kate will be the one to do that for us this season.
“Our squad is looking pretty good at the moment. Other players can still come down for a run, but we are close to capacity.”
ACE Women play their second pre-season match against The Lakes at Wolter Park tomorrow (January 18) kick-off 6.30pm.
